After qualifying as a graduate civil engineer, I quickly realised spending time in muddy fields in the depths of winter, looking through a theodolite and waving my hands, was not for me. Fortunately, a part-time MBA at Henley Management College provided the opportunity to make a move into business consultancy, dealing with blue-chip organisations such as the Royal Bank of Scotland, Tesco, BT and Railtrack.

Consulting at board level and working with directors of major organisations was quite interesting and challenging. But then, after founding my own property-related business, it felt as if these larger corporates just lacked the level of excitement and ‘roller coaster ride’ experience of the mid-market. Since 2003 (after exiting my own business), I have been working exclusively with high-growth tech companies, helping their owners to identify and achieve exit strategies.

Life in business is a constant process of evolution, so from 2010 onwards, I began to work more closely with investment funds on sell-side negotiations.

This developed in me an appreciation for what BEAN Partners calls the ‘investor lens’ — our insight into how an investor views a business. As a result, I can deliver the best outcomes for our clients in terms of investment strategies and the successful execution of funding transactions.

Outside work I am very much the family man, happily spending time coaching my son’s football team on a Saturday morning or being a taxi driver, taking the kids to ballet or piano lessons. While my glory days of competitive rugby and tae-kwon-do are something of a fading memory, I still very much enjoy cycling and the odd game of basketball.
